Day 1: Kayak through the meanders of the Petrohué river
Our Van picks you up at 8:30 a.m. at your Hotel in Puerto Varas. Once we are en route, we will travel approximately 35 minutes along a very pleasant road that borders Lake Llanquihue to our base of operations located in Ensenada:
Along the way there are many opportunities to take beautiful pictures. If you prefer to meet us at our base, we have car parks and all the facilities you need including a restaurant.
At the base, already with your guides (certified in rescue and first aid), apart from reviewing the navigation map together we will prepare to load our sea kayaks and the necessary equipment. We will also have external communication by telephone in case of emergency. Now we say goodbye to civilization and get back on the Van for 25 min. for the next stage: the Petrohué river. There we load the kayaks and after a detailed explanation by our guide, it is time to start paddling through the calm waters. The Petrohué current will push us all day to advance without so much effort.
After 1h30 +/- we arrive at one of the numerous river beaches for a lunch break. The landscapes are beautiful and it is an ideal place to watch birds and the forests that surround us, it is very likely to find a Kingfisher waiting for some trout from the shore. After lunch, the river narrows and we arrive at the Termas de Ralún where, if the river level allows it, we take a break in these natural pools on the banks of the river.
It is time to get back into the kayaks, we left the last box of basalt rocks and entered the Reloncaví Fjord where the river opens into the Pacific.
The waters slow down and we continue paddling south until we pass the Ralún peninsula. At this time of day we have a good chance of meeting dolphins playing with the currents of the river that intersect with the currents formed by the tide.
It's time to end the tour and park the kayaks on a private beach in a sheltered cove. After changing into dry clothes, this is where we set up the tents to spend the night on the shores of the fjord.
We walk uphill to meet Yolanda and her son Juan Carlos who are going to receive us at her house. It is time to have an aperitif or a hot Mate next to the wood stove. We have time to talk with our guests and learn a little more about their isolated way of life.
The table is large and we share the products of the garden and the farm.
After a last glass of chicha it is time to go down to the tents for a night under the stars.
Day 2: Kayak on the Sea
After a complete breakfast (at our hosts' house), where we have homemade bread, fresh eggs from the field, quesadillas, juice and whole-grain coffee, it's time to move on a bit. We have time to tour the countryside with Juan Carlos and discover the impressive views of the fjord. Once everything is packed back into the kayaks, we continue paddling south in front of the Yates and Hornopirén volcanoes, many times we find sea lions on this route.
After a couple of hours we arrive at the fishing village of Cochamó, hanging between the Andes and the Fjord. We cross the bay in front of its wooden church and begin to go up the Cochamó River for a couple of kilometers. Its waters are crystal clear and it is a delight to row there.
Lunch will be on the banks of the river and we will continue going up the river accompanied by the tide.
In the afternoon, after one last effort, we landed on an ideal beach to cool off in the river. We meet our Van and start our way back to Puerto Varas. We got back to civilization around 6 pm.
